3 Common Applications of Activated Alumina

Activated alumina is a porous, solid form of aluminum oxide with many applications in the pharmaceutical industry and in research circles. An industry report by Grand View Research forecasts that the activated alumina market will grow at a CAGR of 5.4% till 2025.

Activated alumina is manufactured by heating the compound and removing all moisture for it. The resultant high surface area and porous consistency allow easy uptake of water and other molecules through adsorption.

Activated alumina has several distinguishing properties that make it ideal for use in industrial and chemical settings. This includes high crush strength, resistance to chemical attack, resistance to thermal shock, and of course, its high porosity.

Here are the top three applications of activated alumina.

Catalyst application

Activated alumina is used as a catalyst in the production of many compounds, including polyethylene and hydrogen peroxide. It also works as an inert carrier and substrate for other catalysts in various processes.

Activated alumina primarily works as a Claus catalyst in the oil and gas industry for sulfur recovery in the oil and gas industry.

Desiccant

Activated alumina can also absorb moisture from the air, which makes it ideal for use as a desiccant. At a relative humidity of 50 percent, activated alumina can adsorb nearly 20% of its own weight in water.

The best part is that activated alumina is reusable. Once saturated, the alumina can be heated up to 200 °C to release the water. The regenerated desiccant will then be as good as new.

Fluoride Adsorbent

The need for fresh drinking water is growing steadily as urbanization and industrialization continue to burgeon. Among other contaminants, fluoride has become a higher priority because of its carcinogenic properties.

Activated alumina is used to remove fluoride from drinking water. In many countries, high levels of fluoride in water bodies, making it unfit for human consumption. Using activated alumina to remove fluoride has a 95% removal rate.
